Let’s take a minute and look around this big, wide, beautiful world and recognize the good work that some passionate people are putting into creating a fairer, safer, more just food system. There are a lot of them, right? Nonprofit food-system-advocacy organization Food Tank and nonprofit culinary-arts organization James Beard Foundation think so, too, and they are asking for your help in compiling the annual Good Food Org Guide. Here’s your chance to shine the spotlight on the organizations that you’re involved with that are making strides in food and agriculture, nutrition and health, hunger and obesity, and food justice in the U.S.
It’s pretty simple to sing your organization’s praises. Just fill out the nomination form, and click “Submit.” The hardest question on this form—and also the most important—asks you to describe your organization’s work in 100 words or less. It’s time to polish that elevator speech. You can get an idea of the types of organizations the Good Food Org Guide is looking for by browsing last year’s guide. There’s a diverse collection of national and state efforts ranging from food banks and media groups to sustainable-farming organizations and research initiatives. (Even if you have no intention of making a nomination, you might be impressed by the number and scope of the organizations out there working for food and ag.) Ultimately, a panel of past James Beard Foundation award winners and food and ag professionals make the final—and no doubt difficult—call of who to include.
