The last person you’d expect to crash your classroom or home garden is the First Lady. But that’s exactly what happened in two Washington, D.C., schools and a local couple’s home. On Feb. 25, 2016, Michelle Obama visited Watkins and John Burroughs elementary schools. Mrs. Obama spoke with and engaged with the students in their cooking classes, even helping them make tortillas and search for worms.
Kids, of course, will be kids, no matter who it is in their classroom.
When Mrs. Obama said that she had never made tortillas that way before, a student commented, “I’ve never seen you before.” To which the First Lady replied, “I’ve never seen you before.”
Before leaving the class at Watkins, Mrs. Obama said, “You guys have this amazing garden, and I’m so proud of you. And I want the world to see all the great things you are doing and all the great things you are learning so much from your garden and from your school.”
Mrs. Obama has been pro-healthy eating and exercise as evidenced by her Let’s Move campaign. Visiting these two schools and a local garden was only the first stop. She is embarking on a tour of home gardens this spring.
Why is she doing this? As she told the gardeners she visited in the video, “I’m here to help highlight the amazing work you guys are doing in the garden for your community.”
What would you do if Michelle Obama made a surprise visit to your school or home garden?
