Make sure your livestock medicine cabinet includes the following and that you know how and when to use each:
- baking soda (for stomach upset)
- chlorhexidine
- clean rags/towels
- electrolytes
- Epsom salts
- injectable antibiotic, over-the-counter type
- injectable vitamins, B Complex or B12
- iodine antiseptic (7 percent), for foot rot large-volume syringe (empty and needleless), for flushing wounds, 35 cc
- liquid antacid needles (16- and 18-gauge, 3/4-inch)
- plastic self-cling wrap
- roll cotton
- rubber gloves
- scissors
- sharp blade sharps container for needle disposal
- stethoscope syringes: 18 gauge for adult animals; 20 or 21 gauge for young animals
- thermometer triple-antibiotic ointment for scrapes, minor wounds, etc.
- yogurt (kept in the refrigerator
