In what could be seen as a win for the pro-GMO-labeling camp, the USDA has launched the first government-based labeling program in the United States that would address foods containing genetically modified ingredients. The “USDA Processed Verified” program, operating under the USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service, would be the first of its kind, according to a report from the Associated Press, and would basically serve as a gatekeeper, making sure that foods are what their labels claim them to be. The labeling service is voluntary, much like the USDA Organic label, and will be available to food producers at a cost. The USDA has yet to officially announce the program.
Currently, the most recognized GMO-labeling program is Non-GMO Project Verified, a third-party verification and labeling program for non-GMO food and products.
