Chalkboards are the perfect accent to rustic, country-themed décor. I have several full-sized chalkboards adorning the walls of my farmhouse, but I also love the look and functionality of chalkboard labels. Not only will they add to your home’s heart-felt, homemade atmosphere, they allow you to reuse jars and swap out their contents without having to remove messy sticker labels.
There are many different ways to create chalkboard labels of your own, but this quick and easy method will have you on your way to rustic organization in no time.
Materials
- chalkboard spray paint (available at most craft stores)
- large piece of cardboard
- sheet of self-adhesive shipping-label stickers
- calk, chalk marker or chalk ink pen
- scissors or punches (optional)
Preparation
Spray paint outside or in a spacious, well-ventilated area. Use painter’s tape to secure the sheet of label stickers to the cardboard at all four corners. (Take care not to tape over any stickers.)
Apply several light coats of spray paint to the label sheet, and allow the paint to dry according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Once the paint has dried completely, use scissors or punches to trim to desired shape and size. Use the chalk marker to write on the labels. While you can use a regular piece of chalk, I’ve found that chalk ink pens are especially handy for writing clearly on smaller surfaces. If using a regular piece of chalk, rub the long side of the chalk over the dried paint and erase before writing your labels.
Affix the labels to jars, bottles, canisters, binders, totes, drawers or pantry shelves. The chalk pen can easily be erased with a dry or slightly damp rag, and the labels can be used again and again.
